But, can't.  She doesn't understand why.  She did everything perfectly.
The spell just won't complete.  It's being supressed.
It's not a matter of Renate's expertise, but just that the spell isn't powerful enough to break the suppresion.
Renate generates no threat and expends no mana (still expend the SP).
Also, when a spell has a 65% chance or some such, roll it as if rolling hit chance.  Inform me of anything you think I might need to calculate, such as -5% * enemy luck.

A puff of black smoke swirls around her blades before merging with them, leaving a glowing red sheen.

His body twitches and shakes from the voltage coursing throughout its muscles.

Malica, in pure desperation, scours her inventory for hope.
She finds a Spice and Nut Cookie, granted to her in a more pleasent time.
She devours the cookie.

Good thing, all that fireplay was putting soot in her lungs.

Nothing happens...
