Cave, Greighbaugh Province
“I can’t believe this!” Kilj sent rocks and water hurling through the cave.
Marquis disagreed: he could believe this. “Someone has been destroying them. Deliberately. It has to be.” He looked over his companions. He saw that he was not alone in this deduction.
“Aye,” the word was more of a snarl from Nezminc’s mouth. “Where!” The sliver choked. “Where be the possessors!?”
“Agh! Whatever. We’ll divine it later. The Bloodmaster is not far from here.” Kilj shifted the group’s focus to their second objective.
Marquis dropped down on a rock, sitting in defeat. “I guess you’re right.” He sighed. He had been so close, so much closer to his past. He placed his head in his teal, naked hands. He scorned their nakedness. None of his group offered sympathy. In fact…
“Watch yourself,” advised Kilj. Marquis suddenly remembered the presence of their newest member. He rose his head up and located her.
Sara stood at the opening of the cave, looking from the mountain down at something Marquis couldn’t discern. She was still, perfectly still even in the face of the powerful mountain winds.
Black Bluffs, Ravil Province
Leo and Lea ate lunch together, removed from the rest of the army. It took a number of clever lines and strange orders from Leo to arrange the moment. As a result, Leo didn’t doubt that his soldiers knew what was up. He hoped it would lighten them up, but as a leader he couldn’t help but think that they might judge him poorly.
“Sooo,” Leo teased. “How you enjoying your lovely rations? I opened them up myself ya know, just for you.” Lea moved her gaze to him. Unreadable, and unproductive of a response. Leo lifted his arm, spreading open his claws but an inch away from his face. “With this very paw. This very one, all for ya.”
Lea returned her gaze to her pitiful meal. “Next time, I’ll provide the sustenance.” Gah! Miss. Leo considered subtracting a point. “Once,” Lea began. Oh man! Maybe he did get a point. Lea’s pause lasted long, as if gazing at her rations in silence was amazing reflection. “Bullwinkle restored a dying elk to perfect health.” Leo knew right where this was going. Stories involving Bullwinkle involved him killing something. “He then slaughtered it. It was the most delicious thing I ever did taste.” Score one for Bullwinkle. Maybe she was the gory type.
“Hey,” Leo was about to spring into a rant about how he couldn’t be blamed for lack of magical powers or for the fact that he couldn’t leave the camp for fear of discovery, but was interrupted by the sudden presence of a small girl at his private picnic. “Hey princess!” he greeted. He then noticed her face, something was wrong about it. “You doin’ okay?”
“Who are you?” Apparently she was the one asking the questions here. Leo saddened. He really didn’t want to kill a child.
“We are the Lolin’s.” Lea grabbed Leo’s paw and held it as if a lover. Leo liked where her head was. “At least, as of yesterday.” Lea smiled at Leo. Oh man was she convincing. All this act for a kid too?
“Your Cadkisi, aren’t you? Cadkisi in Ravil.”
Lea opened her mouth but Leo had got there first. “Yep, you got us,” Leo acted found out. “I brought the misses to the bluffs, thought it’d be romantic.” Leo moved his paw to his mouth and whispered aloud. “It’s not working.”
“Oh. Okay. So you’re not bad guys?” The girl stepped closer, opening up her trust to her new friends.
“Not at all,” replied Leo. She reached them, only about two feet away from where they stood.
“My name’s Mina,” she said.
